An Angry Gryphon
Losing my mind over the 2024 presidential election.
Ultimately, a country of hundreds of millions is going to be dragged into a future decided by a few tens of thousands. Maybe even a smaller margin.
Xenophobia, Racism, Transphobia, and depersonalizing women are all foisted up as good by one party. Turns out a lot of people feel those feelings every day, and didn't like the status quo of society making them question those beliefs. Now there's a party of hate that tells them those feelings were good all along.
Some portion of the population seems to believe the party of hate would also cost them a little less in taxes. The party's mega donor, however, openly says that their plans will crash the economy. Less tax on nothing is apparently worth the hate though. Maybe the hate was more important than the less taxes.
Others want to vote for the hate party because the orange leader of the hate party is "firmer" in his support of Israel. Leaving aside that Israel has their own hate party problems right now, and that's a lot to leave aide, it seems to ignore the fact that the orange leader is already preparing to blame Jews in case his hate party loses. Maybe the hate was more important than the support of Israel.
It feels like a lot of folks are trying very hard to seem like they're voting for the party of hate for reasons other than hate; but, it's looking like hate is the only real possible goal.
I've been reading Very Fine People lately (your library likely has the ebook, but also do buy it if you can and support the author). It's helped me feel less crazy, because all the above looks obvious to me, and it turns out it looks obvious because it is obvious.
In short, I'm not feeling OK right now, and I don't think I'll feel OK next week after the election, either. No matter who wins, the cracks aren't just showing but the foundation of society is crumbling.
If you've not yet, please vote. Even if you feel like it doesn't matter. It does. People who want the freedom to hate want you to feel like it doesn't matter. At least 30% of Americans will sit at home and not vote, and the margin of whoever wins will likely be less than 1%. So do the thing.
